Hydro jetting
A drain cable punches a hole through a clog. Hydro jetting washes the whole pipe wall clean, using water at several thousand psi through a nozzle that pulls itself down the line. It's the fix for kitchen lines coated in grease, mains with root regrowth, and lines that clog again a few months after cabling.

Sounds like this?
- The same drain clogging again weeks or months after it was snaked
- A kitchen line that's been cleared more than once this year
- Fine roots coming back in a sewer line after cutting
- Scale or sludge seen on a camera inspection
- A slow main line that never quite drains at full speed
Jetting vs. snaking
| Drain cable (snake) | Hydro jetting | |
|---|---|---|
| What it does | Bores a hole through the clog | Scours the full pipe wall |
| Best for | Single clogs, wipes, toilet clogs, first-time backups | Grease, scale, sludge, root regrowth, repeat clogs |
| Typical cost | $125–$600 | $350–$900 |
| How long it lasts | Until buildup closes the hole again | Usually much longer, the pipe starts clean |
| Risk to old pipe | Low | Needs a camera check first on fragile or broken clay pipe |
How a jetting job runs
- 01
Camera first
A good plumber scopes the line before jetting. If the clay pipe is cracked or a section has collapsed, jetting isn't the answer and can wash soil into the line.
- 02
Choose the nozzle
A penetrating nozzle opens a full blockage; a rotating or root-cutting nozzle cleans walls and trims fine roots.
- 03
Jet from the cleanout
The hose runs from the cleanout toward the city main and is pulled back slowly, cleaning as it comes.
- 04
Camera again
A second look confirms the pipe is clean and shows whether anything structural remains.
Is it safe for older Colorado pipes?
On sound clay, cast iron or PVC, yes. The water pressure is aimed along the pipe, not into it. Where it isn't safe is a line that's already broken, offset or bellied badly, which is why the camera inspection comes first. If the scope shows a collapsed section, the plumber should tell you that instead of jetting.
Common questions
How much does hydro jetting cost in Colorado?+
Most residential main lines run about $350 to $900, depending on the length of the line, the access point and whether a camera inspection is included.
How often should a line be hydro jetted?+
Most homes never need it routinely. Homes with heavy kitchen use or root-prone clay lines sometimes jet every one to three years.
Will hydro jetting remove tree roots?+
A root-cutting nozzle trims fine and medium roots. Thick roots may need a mechanical cutter first, and roots grow back unless the joint is repaired or lined.
Can hydro jetting damage my pipes?+
Not sound pipes. It can make a broken section worse, which is why the line should be scoped first.
